A beacon to the adrift and illumination for the washed ashore.
Perhaps the general did us a favor by portraying a very dim view of the war in Afghanistan.
We must get out of there as quickly as possible.
One can only hope as Bob Herbert writes here and as Gene Robinson advocates here.

The fact is that no matter what we citizens think or do the sheer intertia of the USA's presence in Afghanistan will continue until exhaustion. Finally we can detect that the "Idea of Withdrawel" has been introduced into the debate. I think we can agree that it was a bone-headed stunt to "invade" this pathetic little country. And the tragedy is compounded by our countrys enabeling the corruption there at all levels. We will be asking how our mighty efforts went so wrong well into the future.
The other real weirdness is that the Taliban seems to want in the worst way to "have control" over the citizens of Afghanistan and drag them back to the 13th century. Maybe some insightful shrinks could explain this for us. I honestly do not get the appeal.
One way or another our troops will be coming home, without claiming victory. The question is when.
Thanks for the great blog,
